Overview
Sigiriya is a historic rock stronghold in the northern Matale District of Sri Lanka's Central Province, near the town of Dambulla. The term alludes to a historical and archaeologically significant location dominated by a huge 180-metre-tall rock column. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) chose this location for his new capital. On top of this rock, he erected his castle, which he adorned with colourful frescoes. Following the death of the monarch, the city and royal palace were abandoned. Until the 14th century, it was utilized as a Buddhist monastery.
